Saving Sea Lions from The Museum Lab

Listen to this story:

How will research conducted by Andy Doll, assistant collections manager at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science help save endangered Stellar sea lions in the Gulf of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands? Using Stable Isotope Signature Analysis, Doll and his partners in the study were to guess what sea lion mothers were eating based on their cubs’ whiskers. They found a difference in the diet of the endangered animals as compared to a thriving population of eastern Steller sea lions along the Alaskan coast. A paper describing their groundbreaking methods was recently published in Oecologia a prestigious ecology journal. How does Stable Isotope Signature Analysis work? What next steps should scientists, marine biologists, and the fisheries industry take to help western Steller sea lions recover?
