Life in a war torn country

I was born into a state of war. As was my mother and my father. As were my grandparents and their parents. All of the people they knew in their churches, small towns, at their schools, at their banks were born into this world of war as well.

Our war has gone on so long that few actually recognize it for what it is anymore. It has become normalized and expected for our side to suffer heavy casualties. We expect to lose more than a few to the rigged battles that take place, year after year. Our side is a conquered one but we are not subdued. That has irked the other side for as long as they have beheld our rich skin . The glistening skin that they love to beat on. The skin they love to work ragged, jagged and bruised. The skin they envy so much that it stays on their mind more than ours. That other side has won many battles, they have ingratiated enough of themselves in our ranks, their sicknesses sicken us in generational afflictions. We often hate ourselves and don’t know why, similar to them.

Our war hasn’t netted us many allies. The other side has made sure to engage in a vociferous monopoly of the world, it has erected a p.r. campaign that could put neutral loving Switzerland to shame. Our war rages on with little respite and never coming resolutions, we will always hate each other deep down.

Our war continues striking enemy ten years old kids playing outside just as swift as one of their own will kill our church going senior citizens after they offer to pray for such a demon. The other side is wicked and grows wickeder as a collective every single day. Let’s call it what it is — a war. There are sides to a war , usually two. Usually wars aren’t between equally yoked foes. Usually one side is a bully, one side is banking on numbers, technologies and power. The other side only has their resolve and their knowledge of righteousness in their opposition.

In this case, the white power structures have waged wars on Black people ever since the first Portuguese ships docked on the warm African coast.
