with old school gangsters

in movies and

cinema reels, their craggy flesh

risible within the Depression’s

infernal pleading.

Floating and exuding menace

to newer immigrants

longing to be like them,

with western stars clicking guns

intemperate

in grainy movie serials.

But their memories are of war

and bullet-grizzled sand.

Lightning straining on

haughty beachsides,

in insect frenzy.

Terrifying color indexing

the sweat of

newly-minted soldiers.

The pop culture

comic book

artist cannot forget

those incipient battle sounds,

which will be recreated

lavishly, at some point,

in pen and strain and ink.
