Is Microchipping Humans the Solution for Identity Theft?

Identity theft is not only one of the most common cybercrimes in America, it’s also one of the most common crimes in general. Each year, victims lose over $52 billion, according to AARP.

In fact, nearly 42 million Americans a year fall victim to identity fraud.

However, identity theft crimes aren’t just an American problem or phenomenon. Cybercriminals steal hundreds of billions of dollars from victims across the world.

Ironically, in an effort to protect our personal identity and information, we may have to give up more of our anonymity. Furthermore, it would likely feel like a significant invasion of privacy.

The idea, being discussed by some thought leaders, business tycoons, and policy wonks, is that microchipping humans could potentially eliminate identity theft and fraud.

Here’s how:

Since implanted IDs can’t be stolen or tampered with, your unique reference number will always be secure. Furthermore, since accessing your personal data requires scanning your microchip, there’s no way for anyone to gain unauthorized access to your data, in theory. (However, in practice, that might not always be the case.)

Here are some practical applications of how implanting microchips in people could theoretically eliminate identity theft and fraud.
