How to take a difficult design brief

Collaboration, mirroring and the art of being prepared

Have you ever walked into a design or UX briefing knowing it’s going to be challenging?

Here are some steps and techniques for making sense of the thing in front of you, while ensuring the people you’re taking the brief from are happy with the plan.

A common misconception in design and definitely UX projects — it’s not your job to give the client what they want. It’s your job to find out what they need — and give them confidence in your ability to deliver that.

Briefing-taking is a collaboration, not a battle. If you work in an agency, (not-good) client service people can try to sell or upsell a project with a sledgehammer. You are not selling, you are collaborating with the client. And you’ll get a lot more future work with trust and collaboration than you will with a saleshammer.

Work with the client to agree the most sensible approach to the project.
