The Kibaki Contrast

Today Kenyans from across the country mourn the passing of Kenya’s ‘Servant President’ Emilio Mwai Kibaki, the 3rd. Deep in the heart of the campaign season, Kenyans have taken a break from all the insults, accusations, tribalism, and violence witnessed around the country as politicians from across the political divide champion their preferred 5th.

Politicians over the past few days have remembered president Kibaki fondly using adjectives like patriot, gentleman, dedicated and upright. Others pointed out that he was not power hungry and only thought of the good of all Kenyans alike. In his own words, the late president said “Government will no longer be run on the whims of individuals. The era of roadside policy declarations is gone. My Government’s decisions will be guided by teamwork and consultations.” It is clear that he was a man after the collective good and not individual gain.

Having had the privilege of being governed by President Kibaki and having experienced the fruits of a government that cared about the welfare of its people, Kenyans should therefore remember that popularity isn’t the mark of a true leader but it is his/her heart for the people and an innate desire for the prosperity of the country as a whole.

Today’s brand of politics is based on defaming opponents to paint yourself as the lesser evil. The late head of state once said “It is only people of very small minds and spirits who think that they can only shine if the other fellow is totally blackened.” Issues-based politics will vindicate Kenyans from the tribal hold that leaves us stuck with leaders driven by selfish political gain. Money changing hands shouldn’t be the deciding factor, it should be merit and a proven track record.

After H.E Mwai Kibaki is laid to rest in his Othaya home come Saturday 30th April, will we forget what a true leader looks like? Will we again subscribe to divisive politics? Instead, listen to all the attributes and words of praise said about Mwai Kibaki and measure your preferred leader against them. Does your preferred candidate fit the criteria of what it takes to be one of Kenya’s Greatest Of All Time presidents?
