Exploring your Curiosities Through an Online Course

I have always wanted to learn Information systems and about their security. Recently, I came across an International certification CISA, which is now on my future plan. So I thought to go for a course that can explain the fundamentals of Information Systems, audit and their security. I started searching for those courses that we created for beginners and had only the background of the topic, and I found on Coursera named as Information Systems Auditing, Controls and Assurance.

Information System Auditing

When deciding on a course, I usually look at the syllabus and reviews which for this course were mostly positive.

Course Reviews and Start

This course started with an interview with a practitioner and expert of the field who explained how the juniors should start and what future prospects are there for them.

Interview with an auditing practitioner

The second lecture emphasized that understanding the business process is very important only then you can advise to further streamline the processes. The instructor explained the jargon in a very simple way and definitions were explained with examples shared some real-life examples of data breaches in 2019 in corporations such as Google, Cathay Pacific and capital One. I was very surprised to learn that most of the hacks and data breaches are due to the internal employees’ engagement. In other words, employees are the biggest security threat.

The process of risk assessment managing there is skin implying the risk controls. In the other video, the instructor shared risk Matrix and real-life examples on measuring risk and implying the controls to reduce the same.

Questions for students

The last two videos were based on the introduction of internal control and their classification.

Learnings

While I was researching for courses on this topic, courses on Udemy and other platforms directly started from the technicalities and moved on explaining the processes, but this course seems beginner-friendly and gave a holistic view of Information Systems auditing without jumping into technical processes and Systems. So far I’ve enjoyed every videos and quiz.
