Why Rehabilitation in Prison Helps Inmates and Taxpayers.

The United States of America holds 716 in 100,000 people of the nations population in prison or 22.2% of the world’s population. The majority of those inmates are returning drug offenders such as those who use or sell illegal drugs. However, there is a solution to keep inmates from returning, rehabilitation has been shown to do wonders for those trying to improve their life after their sentence. Not only does it help them find a purpose after prison, but it saves you money in the long run by lowering your taxes since that’s where the money for prison funding comes from.

Recidivism is basically a term to describe the cycle that happens in the United State’s prison system that no one really talks about. It consists of living in poor economic conditions, having to do illegal things to make money or cope with life’s hardships, getting imprisoned for such actions and it continuously repeats because there are no available resources in prison to help one improve their life for when they are released.

Rehabilitation helps to improve the inmates time in prison by using therapy, job training and education programs to give inmates optimism for their future. (J. Diaz) Not only does it allow them to have skills required for jobs after prison, coping methods for dealing with hardships and an overall more positive outlook on life, but more importantly, it keeps them from ending back in prison later on as they are less likely to return to the crime inducing habits that got them arrested in the first place.

According to the Bureau of Prisons statistics, 48.6% of American prisoners are in jail for drug related charges with 18% of prisoners having drug charges as their most serious offense. Using rehabilitation as a way to help prisoners would lower your taxes. In 2015, the average cost per prisoner per year in the United States was on average $31000. If rehabilitation was used more commonly, it would reduce the amount of prisoners coming back into the system which would overall lower the amount of people in prison. This would mean the average cost per prisoner per year would decrease as well since there would be more supplies for less inmates. Less prisoners means less money used to fund prisons and therefore that would mean less tax money coming out of your wallet.
