How much time are you really investing in your creative process? Are you barely scratching the surface of your goals, or are you making enough progress to see a steady growth? Finding the words to exemplify all that you’ve learned, all that you want to share with an audience can be difficult when you’ve set out to do it every day. It’s often easy to convince yourself that you don’t need to put in extra time to create great work, but that’s unfortunately false. If it were as easy as slapping a few words on a page and sending it to print, we’d all be millionaires by now. The truth is, steady growth takes patience, perseverance, and a lot of coffee.

Here are a few ways to leave your writing session feeling like you’ve tackled it all.

The first aspect of writing that I changed or started to implement when I realized my writing was growing a bit dull, was when I decided to challenge myself to write a piece that channeled all of my emotions. I wanted to feel what I was putting down on paper, and engaging with deep emotions means that you’re probably creating something that will resonate with the reader.

Books, articles, research, and just about anything else you can find that gets you thinking. When I lack ideas, I crack open my notebook, write a bit of wordy nonsense, then take a trip to a local bookstore to pick up a single read that piques my interest. I’ve noticed by doing this, it really helps me get out of writer’s block or whenever I find myself in a creative rut.

Finally, how you plan has a significant influence on the work you get done on any given day. If you’re scrambling to finish that last-minute piece, running through edits that should’ve been turned in hours ago, it’s probably time you take your planning a bit more seriously.
