The Value of The Critique

We have to be able to critique the tribes which we have built, for if we cannot, we will never grow.

We have to be able to critique the things we hold dear — like our friendships, and our relationships, and our values, and our work.

We have to be able to critique the tribes which we have built, for if we cannot, we will never grow.

We will never evolve.

We will never get better at whatever it is that we’re doing — whether it is personal or professional.

It has to be ok to say that something isn’t sitting right with you. And when you say that, it shouldn’t be met with excommunication from whatever group you have found yourself in.

It should be met with an open ear, and an understanding that whoever is giving this critique is seeing something different than you.

They have a fresh pair of eyes.

They have a whole different narrative that comes with them.

They are not attacking you — they’re just trying to help.

They have an entirely different mind, and heart, and soul that is going to see things that you are not — and that’s ok.

It has to be ok, otherwise how on earth will we learn? And grow? And get better?

Now, there’s a difference between being cruel and being critical.

When you are critical, you should be adding value. You should be lifting the veil on things that others have lost sight of, or elements that never came into their field of vision.

When you are critiquing, your words must be measured, and thought out, and delivered in a way that is meant to heal and help.

When you are cruel, you are causing pain or suffering with no consideration for the person on the receiving end of your comments. Sometimes it’s in the guise of unsolicited advice, sometimes it’s just blatant in it’s brashness. Either way, your cruelty adds no value, nor does it make the problem at hand any better. It just splinters and wounds, adding more fuel to the fire.

There is such a thing as constructive criticism — and it’s ok to embrace that.

But when criticism is met with condemnation — progress and growth are stopped in their tracks.

And that’s not a win for anyone.

Let yourself be seen through the eyes of your coworkers and the ones you love.

Make the space for critique, so that you can bloom, and flourish, and grow.
