2017 Year in Review

Inaugural Zephyr TRB Reception

We capped off TRB with Zephyr’s inaugural TRB Reception (complete with the NFL playoffs interrupting in the background) held at Lost&Found DC.

Founding Stakeholder George Naylor signing the Zephyr Mission while David Ory looks on.

This spring we published a draft of an open source code directory to serve as a clearinghouse for useful open source tools and models.

Voting at workshop on Research priorities

The second part of the workshop was a project “shark-tank” where three contestants were pitted against each other to become the first project selected to be pursued by the Foundation.

On the tails of selecting the General Travel Network Standard and Tools as Zephyr’s first project, we spent the summer putting together a grant application to support the project and Zephyr core activities. Still waiting…

Fall centered our first official board meeting and strategic planning session, which was held in Chicago in early November. We used an outside facilitator who knew what they were doing to help keep us on task and following all the rules. So much happened at the meeting, but here are some highlights:

Ballpark budget, fundraising, and staffing plan approved. A lot of this will depend on the money we can raise, but all were in agreement that we’d like to hire an Executive Director ASAP! Ideally the Zephyr Core will be supported by memberships while larger projects that can be flexed up/down will be grant-supported.

And….projects and programs were selected to make up our 2018 Agenda (more on that next time).

We capped off 2017 with the Zephyr Logo contest in December. Dozens of stakeholders and members of the public chimed in with submissions, votes, and critiques. We like what we ended up with and just finished updating our website to be more consistent with the new logo and colors.

Our new logo!

Adios 2017!
