4 Tools That Helped Me Become A Self Taught Programmer

You will need structure, clarity, challenges, and experience to become a self-taught programmer and these tools will give you that respectively

Programming is fun when your code works. But there are very few things that are as frustrating as code that doesn’t work. It is not as bad if you just miss a crucial character in the syntax but when you have logical errors, the frustration that you feel can’t be compared to many things you’ll experience in life.

When I first started programming in 2016, it is the logical errors that kept me away from programming but I also had a hard time learning the syntax of even the easiest programming language in my opinion — HTML.

But in 2016, I was introduced to C which was so hard that I failed my tests a lot. I was a civil engineering student and I didn’t think that I would ever need any knowledge of programming. I started hating the language as well as other languages like MATLAB and I was so glad when I got through them.

But the exposure to programming kindled some curiosity in me that kept me coming back to programming again. Each time I came back to programming though, I kept getting discouraged because it was hard since I could not understand anything until I got introduced to these tools.

There is no doubt that there are a lot of course material out there that will teach you how to program but the truth is that as a beginner, you have very few people who actually know how to teach you programming concepts.

For me, I was lucky to enroll in this course when Professor David J. Malan was the one teaching it. I don’t know if I would have understood it if any other person was the main instructor.

He helped me overcome my fear of working in C and it was a crucial part along my programming journey. As of writing this article, he is still the main instructor for this course by the way.
