I Get Too Many External Views with No Money

Almost 3k views and only $2. How?

I joined Medium almost two years ago, and my experience has been mixed. On the one hand, Medium allowed me to make extra money to pay down my student loans and have an emergency fund. On the other hand, it can be challenging to “make it” here, and even when you see an increase in views and earnings, it may not last.

Lately, I have noticed that a lot of my articles are getting external views. And it makes sense because when I spend 2 extra minutes on SEO, it delivers results. I cannot complain about putting effort into SEO and getting views, right? This is exactly why I started learning about SEO – I wanted to get more people to read my stories. However, not seeing any view from paying Medium members is upsetting.

I published a few articles recently that got mostly external views. And even with some of my most-read stories, nearly all the views are external. Since I believe in transparency and not trying to pretend I’m doing great while not, I would like to share my failures with you. I mean, sometimes I succeed quite a lot with my writing! But I don’t want to be fake and pretend everything is going well.
